Mass Effect Gallery Upgraded From ‘Lightbox 2′ to ‘Slimbox’

Published by projectego on January 10, 2008

Those of you whom might have recently checked out our awesome little Mass Effect Gallery will have seen the awesome little JavaScript pop-up animation that occurs whenever you attempt to view an image at full size. It’s a gorgeous little effect which was made possible thanks to the Lightbox 2 WordPress plugin. The only problem with the Lightbox plugin, however, was that it’s just such a huuuuge file and takes an eternity to download on a 56k connectin.

The idea of waiting for a page to load is a turn off in itself, and we don’t really need any additional WordPress plugins making things run any less smoothly, either. As much as I love the Lightbox 2 plugin - it’s gone now. But instead we have no installed the seemingly-identical ‘Slimbox’ plugin which is built around the same premise as Lightbox 2 - displaying images in a very sexy fashion - but instead, Slimbox manages to accomplish what Lightbox 2 was able to but in a much more compact and optimized fashion.

This is good for everyone all round as it means our 56k visitors need not worry about having to have to wait forever for the Mass Effect Gallery to load, and that I don’t have to worry about fat JavaScript scripts borking my dedicated sever. Everybody is happy!

This might not mean a whole lot to some of the less technical Mass Effect fans among us, but all you need to know is that basically the move from Lightbox 2 to Slimbox means that you’ll be able to enjoy a much smoother ride while browsing throughout Mass Effect X. Yay!
