Mass Effect 2 save game details
BioWare community coordinator Chris Priestly has released details on how to carry over your game saves from Mass Effect 1 into 2 (and 3).

Save Game Import- *Upon starting a new game from the main menu, players can import a character save from Mass Effect 1
- *The Player chooses which character to bring in. Bringing in more than one character is possible, this will create a second or additional profile(s), just like in Mass Effect 1.
- *For Xbox 360 players need to be signed into your profile that you used to play through Mass Effect 1.
- *On PC players will select the .MassEffectSave files to import.
- *The profile and save data must be present on the hard drive and not an MU.
- *There is a limit of 11 end-of-game saves that can be imported into ME2. This means that if the player was to complete ME1 12 times, regardless of the number of unique playthroughs used, the 12th save will not be available for import, but saves 1 through 11 will be available.
At this point we have revealed that the save game import system will carryover all your decisions and plot decisions from ME1 into ME2. Did you save the Council? Who survived Virmire? And how did you handle your most ardent fan? We don't want to list everything out and spoil the surprises we have in store for you, but rest assured you will be pleased when you see just how much carries over into Mass Effect 2.

wait what do they mean "There is a limit of 11 end-of-game saves that can be imported into ME2. This means that if the player was to complete ME1 12 times, regardless of the number of unique playthroughs used, the 12th save will not be available for import, but saves 1 through 11 will be available" that was that clear for me

The first 11 end of game saves will be available but wont be able to select any more than that. Shouldnt matter as there arent that many end of game variations to warrant having anymore than 11.

Re: Mass Effect 2 save game details
Damnit, I'm confused, now. Couple weeks ago I started a second playthrough with my first Shepherd. And I went Renegade (mostly. I mean, I couldn't force myself to commit genocide. And a few other things.) The first playthrough I went paragon.
WHICH playthrough will carry over?
Damnit, I think I'm going to have to play through again before Tuesday. Who needs sleep? And I'm sure I can skip school and work.

You can pick which you carry over (can use up to 11 old saves).

Yeah, I saw that, but how can it tell the difference? I have a save from my first playthrough (within the last few minutes, I believe) but the others are all chronologically after it. And I, obviously, couldn't save after I beat the whole thing (could I? I don't remember doing so) so how would it know what my final decisions were, like which human councillor I reccomended? Maybe it autosaved, but on my second playthrough it's been autosaving over that, so...
I don't know, I hope you're right.

I think it shows you some of the decisions you made in a list (from what i saw in a video yesterday) and if they were renegade/paragon decisions.

Re: Mass Effect 2 save game details
Not sure what you're talking about there, but apparent;y ME1 made some kinda special save once you beat the game. So I had the option to use "Walker Shepherd, Level 49 Infiltrator," and no one else. I assume that when I finish my second ME1 playthrough, or a third one, it'll add the option to be "Walker Shepherd, Level 60 Infiltrator," or whatever.
It also offers you the opportunity to redecorate your Shepherd and choose a new class.
And, actually, what you might be talking about there is when it shows what you had. As in, a list of what level you were, how many credits you had, how many minerals you collected, and so on.
